Greek Honey Doughnuts

Loukoumades Recipe

Loukoumades are small, fried dough balls that are soaked in honey and sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. They are a popular dessert in Greece and are often enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea.

Yields:  20-25 loukoumades  Prep time:  20 minutes   Rising time:  1 hour  Cooking time:  2-3 minutes per batch

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 1 cup (250 ml) warm water
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup (50 ml) olive oil
  • 2 cups (250 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the honey syrup:

  • 1 cup (250 ml) honey
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) water
  • 1 cinnamon stick

For the topping:

  • 1/2 cup (125 grams) ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (50 grams) powdered sugar

Method


  • Make the dough: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until the yeast is foamy.

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the olive oil, flour, and salt.

  • Add the yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.

  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  • Punch down the dough and divide it into small pieces, about the size of a walnut.  

  • Heat about 1 inch of oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).

  • Fry the dough balls in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
  • Remove the

    loukoumades from the oil and drain on paper towels.

  • Make the honey syrup: In a small saucepan, combine the honey, water, and cinnamon stick. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-10 minutes, or until the honey is slightly thickened.

  • Soak the loukoumades: Dip the warm loukoumades into the honey syrup and let them soak for a few minutes.

  • Coat with cinnamon and sugar: Drain the loukoumades and roll them in a mixture of cinnamon and powdered sugar.
