Albanian Meatballs

Qofte are popular Albanian meatballs that are often served with a variety of sides, such as rice, potatoes, or salad. They can be grilled, baked, or fried.

Yields:  12-15 meatballs  Prep time:  20 minutes  Cooking time:  20-25 minutes

Ingredients

 

For the meatballs:

  • 1 pound (500 grams) ground lamb or beef
  • 1/2 cup (125 grams) breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) chopped onion
  • 1 egg
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper


For the sauce:

  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces/425 grams) diced tomatoes
  • 1 cup (250 ml) chicken broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Method

 

  • Make the meatballs: In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumbs, onion, egg, garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well until thoroughly combined.

  • Form the meatballs: Shape the mixture into small meatballs.

  • Cook the meatballs: Grill, bake, or fry the meatballs until cooked through.

  • Make the sauce: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until softened.

  • Add the sauce ingredients: Add the diced tomatoes, chicken broth, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.

  • Serve: Serve the meatballs with the sauce.
