Aloo tikki Indian street food recipe

Aloo tikki is a popular Indian snack made from mashed potatoes mixed with spices and deep-fried. It’s often served with chutney or tamarind sauce and topped with a chick pea curry.


Yields:  12-15 tikki  Prep time:  30 minutes  Cooking time:  10-12 minutes

Ingredients


For the tikki:

  • 2 large potatoes, boiled and mashed
  • 1/2 cup (125 grams) gram flour
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) chopped cilantro
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water

For frying:

  • Oil for deep frying

 

Method


  1. Make the tikki mixture: In a large bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, gram flour, onions, cilantro, cumin, coriander, red chili powder, turmeric powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until thoroughly combined. Add water as needed to form a thick paste.

  2. Shape the tikki: Divide the mixture into 12-15 equal parts and shape them into small patties.

  3. Fry the tikki: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the tikki until golden brown and crispy.

  4. Drain and serve: Drain the tikki on paper towels and serve immediately.

Note: Chickpea curry is a popular accompaniment to aloo tikki. You can serve it on the side or use it as a dipping sauce.
