Cracked Conch is a popular Bahamian dish made with breaded and deep-fried conch. It’s often served as an appetizer or main course.

Yields:  4-6 servings  Prep time:  30 minutes  Cooking time:  10-12 minutes

Ingredients

 

  • 1 pound (500 grams) conch meat, cleaned and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup (125 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 cup (125 grams) breadcrumbs
  • Oil for frying

Method


  • Prepare the conch: Clean and thinly slice the conch meat.

  • Season the conch: Season the conch with salt and pepper.

  • Create the breading station: Set up three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with beaten egg, and one with breadcrumbs.

  • Bread the conch: Dip each piece of conch in the flour, then the egg, and finally the breadcrumbs.

  • Fry the conch: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the breaded conch in batches until golden brown and crispy.

  • Drain and serve: Drain the fried conch on paper towels and serve immediately with your favourite dipping sauce, such as tartar sauce or marinara sauce.
