A Savoury Cambodian Rice Cake

Cambodian Num Krok recipe

Nom Krok is a popular Cambodian street food, known for its savoury and slightly sweet flavour. These bite-sized pancakes are typically cooked in a special pan with small, round molds.

Yields:  12-15 pancakes  Prep time:  20 minutes  Cook time:  5-7 minutes per batch

Ingredients

 

  • 1 cup (250 ml) cooked rice, cooled
  • 1 cup (250 grams) rice flour
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) chopped green onions
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil, for greasing the pan
     
     

 

Method

 

  • Prepare the batter: In a large bowl, combine the cooked rice, rice flour, coconut milk, green onions, sugar, and salt. Mix well until a smooth batter is formed.

  • Heat the pan: Heat a special num krok pan or a regular skillet over medium heat. Grease the pan with oil.  

  • Cook the pancakes: Pour batter into each mold of the pan, filling it about halfway. Cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the bottom is golden brown.

  • Flip and cook: Carefully flip the pancakes and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, or until both sides are golden brown.

  • Serve: Serve the hot pancakes immediately with a sweet dipping sauce or savoury toppings like shredded coconut or chopped peanuts.
