Loco Moco: A Hawaiian Comfort Food Classic

Loco Moco is a popular Hawaiian dish consisting of a bed of rice topped with a meat patty (usually hamburger), a fried egg, and brown gravy. 

Yields:  2 servings  Prep time:  20 minutes  Cook time:  30-35 minutes

Ingredients

 

 

For the rice:

  • 1 cup (250 ml) white rice 
  • 2 cups (500 ml) water
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt


For the meat patty:

  • 1/2 pound (250 grams) ground beef
  • 1/4 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

For the gravy:

  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (250 ml) beef broth
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For serving:

  • 1 egg, fried

 

Method


  1. Cook the rice: Rinse the rice and cook it according to package directions.

  2. Make the meat patty: In a bowl, combine the ground beef, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. Form into a patty.

  3. Cook the meat patty: Cook the meat patty in a skillet over medium heat until browned on both sides and cooked through.

  4. Make the gravy: Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and milk. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until thickened. Season with salt and pepper to taste.  

  5. Assemble the Loco Moco: Place a scoop of rice on a plate. Top with the meat patty, a fried egg, and gravy.
