Conch fritters are a popular Bahamian appetizer or snack made with conch meat, flour, and spices. They’re deep-fried until golden brown and crispy.

Yields:  4-6 servings  Prep time:  30 minutes  Cooking time:  10-12 minutes

Ingredients


  • 1 pound (500 grams) conch meat, cleaned and chopped
  • 1 cup (250 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) milk
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Oil for frying

 

Method


  • Prepare the conch: Clean and chop the conch meat.

  • Make the batter: In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Gradually add the milk and egg, mixing until just combined.

  • Add the conch: Add the chopped conch to the batter and mix well.

  • Fry the fritters: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown.

  • Drain and serve: Drain the fritters on paper towels and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce, such as tartar sauce or marinara sauce.
