Poi mochi is a popular Hawaiian snack, typically made with poi, mochiko flour, and sugar. It’s deep-fried until golden brown and crispy on the outside, with a soft and chewy interior.

Note: Poi is a traditional Hawaiian food made from taro root. It can be purchased at some Asian grocery stores or online.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound (454 grams) poi
  • 1 cup (250 grams) mochiko flour
  • 1/2 cup (125 grams) sugar
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) water
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Method

  1. Combine ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the poi, mochiko flour, sugar, and water. Mix well until a smooth batter forms.

  2. Heat the oil: Heat the vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).

  3. Fry the mochi: Using a spoon, drop small spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, turning occasionally.

  4. Drain and serve: Remove the fried mochi from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot or cold.
