Taiyaki: Crispy Fish-Shaped Treats

Taiyaki are delightful Japanese fish-shaped cakes filled with sweet red bean paste. They are a popular street food and a fun treat to make at home.

Suggested Taiyaki Pan

Ingredients

 

  • 1 cup (125g) cake flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) milk
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Red bean paste (anko)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

 

Method


  1. Make the Batter: In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and sugar.

  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, oil, and vanilla extract.

  3. Combine Wet and Dry: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, whisking constantly until a smooth batter forms. Let the batter rest for 30 minutes at room temperature.

  4. Heat the Taiyaki Pan: Heat a taiyaki pan over medium heat. Lightly grease the molds with oil.

  5. Fill the Molds: Pour batter into each mold, filling about 2/3 full. Spoon a small amount of red bean paste into the center of each batter half.

  6. Cook the Taiyaki: Close the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown. Carefully open the pan and flip the taiyaki. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

  7. Serve: Remove the taiyaki from the pan and let them cool slightly before serving.

 

Tips:

 

  • You can find taiyaki pans online or at some specialty kitchen stores.

  • You can use other fillings, such as custard cream, chocolate, or even savoury fillings like cheese or vegetables.

  • For best results, use a light and airy batter.
