Dominican yaniqueques recipe street food

Yaniqueques are a popular Dominican fried bread, often enjoyed as a breakfast treat or a side dish.

Yields:  8-10 yaniqueques  Prep time:  20 minutes  Cook time:  10-12 minutes

Ingredients



  • 2 cups (250 grams) all-purpose flour  
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup (125 ml) water
  • Oil for frying

 

Method



  • Combine dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  • Add wet ingredients: Add the melted butter and water to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.

  • Roll out dough: Divide the dough into 8-10 equal portions. Roll each portion into a thin circle.

  • Fry the yaniqueques: Heat oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the yaniqueques, a few at a time, until golden brown on both sides.

  • Drain and serve: Remove the yaniqueques from the oil and drain on paper towels.
     
    Serve hot with butter, honey, or your favourite topping.
